Jumping Simulations

I’ve noticed more and more an obsession with the idea, first brought into common consciousness by The Matrix, of living in a sort of matrix. The theory, the belief that we are living in a sort of simulation. I think for some, it might be a sort of comfort to think about the idea that this world isn’t real, that it is a simulation, that it is a practice of sorts. The idea that the pain and suffering, all the ways that the world fails us, individually and collectively can be swept away with a belief that it is a simulation can be used to numb or distance ourselves from the pain of existence. But it is a dangerous lie. I think there is this weird underlying symptom within our civilization of apathy. A celebration in ineptitude, ignorance, and idealizing the profane. And I think this concept of living in a simulation is one more layer added onto this civilized apathy and blind obedience. If nothing matters then why should I care? If the sacred has been torn down and all that is left is profane, then let me worship at the pillar of the profanely ignorant and declare him a god. It has happened as I grew up, it grew up all around me and I didn’t realize it until I was scrolling on TikTok (as we do) and came across several posts that postulated we live in a simulation. It brought me back to years ago when I went to a small local talk about being a star seed. All of it felt wrong to me, like a cat being pet tail to head. I shivered and wanted to escape the touch of these ideas. But I’ve sat with them and wrestled with why these ideas are so abhorrent to me. I’ll save the star seeds for another time. Instead, I am looking at this concept of the simulation and how easy it is to fall into. We are living most of our lives in simulations – spending hours doom scrolling on social media sites, binging our latest tv shows on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, and losing ourselves in gaming worlds. So what is the nature of reality? And does it matter anymore? I think it does. I think there are people, the PTB (the Powers That Be for those who didn’t grow up watching Buffy) who would very much like it if we abandoned reality for the simulated world so that they can have free reign on the resources of this world, so that they can claim it all as if they were the winners in some fucked up hungry hippo scenario. If you think we are one of the hippos in this scenario, you’re out of your mind. We are the marbles, along with the cattle, the trees, the rivers, and everything that exists on this world. And it is easy to believe that they have already won. They want us to believe this is true, it makes everything so much easier for them. But the truth is they are far from winning, and we can still take it all back. It seems insurmountable because we have believed these lies for so long. But the truth is easy. Look, just look at those orcas in the Mediterranean. You’d think an orca has no business, no ability to sink a yacht. And yet, they are doing it like it’s some kind of connect 4 game and they have all the colors. It is just as easy for us. All we have to do is be present, call them out, and refuse to buy into their slop.
